If you’ve ever watched Cocktail starring Tom Cruise and thought to yourself, “I’d sure love to live my life as a bartender”, then this article is for you. Also, if you’re the friend who helps make all the drinks at the party and people come to you because you make that extra special gin and tonic, or that outstanding kahlua mudslide, then you were born to be a bartender.

Being a bartender requires many different skills. First and foremost you need to be able to deal with people. At most bars or clubs you will get inundated with people asking you for drinks and you need to make sure to take the bad with the good customers in stride. People will also get pushy - many people want their drink served now and hate waiting. You will also have to deal with rude people who don’t tip, don’t say thanks or complain that there isn’t enough alcohol in their drink. If you can handle these types of people, including the obnoxious drunk, then you are already ahead of the curve and are well prepared for a bartending career.

There are some great bars in Dallas that are hiring today. If you are looking for work in the Arts District, Government District or near the Farmers Market, you will find plenty of clubs, restaurants and bars that are hiring today. Don’t be scared away because of the bad economy, even when times are tough people still drink (and proabably more than they should).

If you are living near SMU, there are some great college bars in the Knox Henderson district that are hiring right away. There are also many other great college bars that are good places to start your career and learn the ropes before moving on to large restaurants and establishments.
